Three women queue at a water pump in Liwonde, Machinga District. They will have to walk some ten minutes to their village carrying the water on their heads.
The waste of water due to badly fixed screws in the pump makes this place a suitable one for mosquitoes to spread, what also helps spreading malaria. Stagnant waters as well as the rains in the rainy season are major causes for water-borne diseases. Rains sweep the land and take wastes (over all human and animal ones) to the water sources, causing diseases.
